Cancer Care Consultants of Northern California

C. Gregg Carter, M.D.

Gregg Carter’s leadership is highly respected by the medical community in his roles as Medical Director of St. Elizabeth’s Hospice and as Mercy Medical Center’s Chief of Medical Staff-elect. He has a very deliberate, thoughtful approach to problem solving that his colleagues and his patients appreciate. “I came to Cancer Care Consultants, and to Mercy Medical Center, because I wanted to work closely with patients. Unlike some hospitals, where physicians are rushed and overwhelmed with too many patients, here we are able to give time and a great deal of consideration to each patient.” Dr. Carter is optimistic about the changes he sees in the field of cancer treatment. He reads avidly about new drugs and new treatment regimens, and gains new insights into understanding the disease. He believes that cancer treatment has improved greatly in the time he has practiced oncology, and is confident that the field will continue to rapidly develop, offering new options, and new hope, to his patients.

Dr. Carter has a Bachelor’s of Science in History, and his M.D. degree is from University of Oklahoma, where he earned Alpha Omega Alpha Honors and was the Class President. His internship and residency were at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Internal Medicine. During his residency, he worked on the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and so began his specialization in oncology. He explained, “I wanted to practice in an area where people really need a doctor. In oncology, I am much closer to my patients.” He stayed at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center for his Fellowship in Hematology/Oncology. In his work on the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit he was responsible for allogenic, autologous and peripheral blood stem cell support. Dr. Carter is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Board Certified in Medical Oncology. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, and the California Medical Association.

In 1996, Dr. Carter relocated to Redding, California, to join Cancer Care Consultants. He had rejected opportunities to work in a high-paced, urban setting. Instead, he and his wife sought a healthy environment to raise their five children, and found it in Redding. “This is a wonderful community, with an excellent hospital. Mercy draws special people who want to practice here.” He feels that Cancer Care Consultants is the ideal practice for him, because it is independent, yet works closely with the Mercy Medical Cancer Center physicians and staff.

Dr. Carter has a very direct approach about a patient’s prognosis and options, which patients appreciate a great deal. He is a survivor of both Hodgkin’s Disease and prostate cancer. “I can help everyone – I may not be able to cure everyone, but I can work with them to make them pain-free. I can treat their symptoms, and I can listen; I can talk with patients and families and be with them in this most difficult of times”.
